William K. Bowes Jr. Award in Medical Genetics
Acknowledging Rising Stars
The William K. Bowes, Jr. Award in Medical Genetics was established by Partners HealthCare Personalized Medicine to recognize and honor an outstanding physician or scientist who is completing or who recently has completed his or her training in medical or laboratory genetics or a combined training program with medical genetics. This national, prestigious award provides visibility to the importance of genetics in the future of health care and highlights the need for and the exciting opportunities available to those who are pursuing or considering becoming a medical geneticist.
The Award
The William K. Bowes, Jr. Award in Medical Genetics consists of a cash award of $20,000, and a framed certificate which are given at an Award Dinner. Awardees also present at Grand Rounds at Harvard Medical School.
Selection Criteria
Eligible candidates must have completed all of the official requirements for their training leading to board certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) in clinical genetics, clinical cytogenetics, clinical molecular genetics, or clinical biochemical genetics. Individuals in a joint training program with pediatrics, internal medicine, maternal-fetal medicine, or molecular genetic pathology are also eligible. All such individuals who have completed the requirements within four years of nomination are eligible.
Candidates must have a proven record of academic accomplishments, exemplify excellence in their areas of specialty, and show exceptional promise and commitment for continued future leadership.
Evaluation of candidates will also be based upon the extent to which they have:
- Contributed at national scientific meetings and authored publications;
- Advanced an area of laboratory diagnostics;
- Demonstrated confidence and competence in all aspects of medical genetics; and
- Demonstrated exceptional potential for directing a clinical diagnostic laboratory.
